About this session:

Venture to the US or Canada for your study abroad program! When you think of the US, you think of fast food, Hollywood Blvd. pop culture and major sports teams, but the US has much more to offer students and is one of the top destinations for eager young people to study abroad. Similarly, the neighbor to the North, Canada is home to an abundance of natural wonders, big cities, and an active lifestyle. Both offer students great quality education with high academic standard. Join this session to hear more about the benefits of doing a study program in one of the two countries and hear from a panel of the top universities in the USA on what makes their program unique!

 

During this session you will hear about:

  • Why choose a study abroad program in the US or Canada
  • Insight into both destinations, highlights of regional and local travel opportunities and activities
  • Hear directly from top universities in the US on their programs and what unique experiences they can offer students

Study Advisor, KILROY

Caroline is a 30-something U.S. enthusiast (at least before Trump), who has lived and studied in both Colorado and California for several years. She has been with KILROY Sweden as a study advisor for almost 10 years, and loves to guide new students out into the world. To study abroad is a truly great way to not only learn new things and learn about yourself, but also to experience a new country in-depth and to be able to live like a local abroad. How cool is that? Today she lives in Stockholm with her half-American husband and a son.

Green River College

Started as an international student at Green River College in 2014. GRC was a great start of my academic career and a great experience in general. After returning to my home country Green River College asked me to share my experience with other students and offered me the position as European Representative. Carola Smith

Dean, Educational Programs, Santa Barbara City College

Carola Smith currently serves as Dean of the Business Division and International Programs at Santa Barbara City College. In this role, she provides oversight for SBCC’s Study Abroad Program as well as for the college’s International Student Support Program and is responsible for recruitment, enrollment management, international engagement, international admissions, program development and risk management. Carola came to the US as an international student and earned a Bachelor Degree, Master’s Degree and Teaching Certificate in English as a Second Language from the University of California, Santa Barbara. She has lived and traveled abroad extensively and considers herself a product of international education.

Ashley Tankersley

Manager, International Student Recruitment, Hillsborough Community College (HCC)

Ashley Tankersley has been managing international student recruitment at Hillsborough Community College (HCC) for nine years. In her role at the college, she develops recruitment plans to grow and diversify international student enrollments by nurturing international partnerships and attending overseas recruitment events. Most of all, Ashley loves meeting students from all over the world! Previously, Ashley was a U.S. Peace Corps volunteer in Peru, where she initiated and implemented women and youth entrepreneurship programs. Ashley received her MA in International Education from the SIT Graduate Institute. When she is not traveling, Ashley loves spending time with her adventurous toddler and her husband, who teaches law at HCC.

Rob Finlayson

Manager – Partnerships and Pathways , Carleton University

Rob Finlayson is a seasoned international admissions professional with over 10 years of experience working in international education in both Canada and the United Kingdom. As Manager of Carleton Universities partnerships and pathways program, Rob is responsible for creating new opportunities for international students at Carleton and he has traveled extensively around the world meeting with students and parents to provide advice and guidance on university admissions. Rob is a passionate public speaker who regularly presents on Canadian university admissions, and advises students about study options in Canada in general and at Carleton University in particular. Overall, he is passionate about helping students find the right pathway to reach their academic goals.

Maja Weiss

Education Abroad Manager, KILROY International

Maja works as Product Manager for Education at KILROY, and has previously lived and studied in China. The time as a student in Beijing was a great way to learn about an entirely different country and culture in addition to the academics. She believes studying abroad is something all students should allow them selves to do at least once in their life.

Chad has traveled extensively to Scandinavia, and has personally helped hundreds of university students from Sweden, Norway, and Denmark achieve their goal of studying abroad in California. He works on campus, and also grew up in sunny San Diego, so he can tell you not only about the awesome student life at SDSU, but also about all the fun & exciting things you can do on weekends in this world famous city.
